You rebel you…eating those foods that are banned in other countries!

Listen, I don’t mean to be a buzz-kill if this is your thing, but here we go:

Farm Raised Salmon has been fed GMO grains, and is ALSO chemically treated to give it it’s pink hue. They are fed high levels of antibiotics..the highest of ALL livestock. They also have 7 levels higher of PCB than wild salmon. Bastards.

Ractopamine- Sprayed on 80% of American pig and cattle. “In an early Canadian study, monkeys given ractopamine “developed daily tachycardia”– rapid heart beat. Rats fed ractopamine developed a constellation of birth defects like cleft palate, protruding tongue, short limbs, missing digits, open eyelids and enlarged heart. Two cousin drugs of ractopamine, clenbuterol and zilpaterol, cause such adrenalin effects in humans they are banned by the Olympics. Cyclist Alberto Contador failed a Tour de France anti-doping test in 2010 for levels of clenbuterol which he said he got from eating meat. Clenbuterol has been banned or restricted in meat after human toxicities. “The use of highly active beta-agonists as growth promoters is not appropriate because of the potential hazard for human and animal health,” wrote the journal Talanta.” (source Alternet)

  • Flame Retardant Sports Drinks-  One plus here is SOME companies have pulled BVO from their sports drinks since the word got out but double check on drinks such as Sunkist, Mountain Dew and other “citrusy” drinks. BVO is linked to endocrine and nervous disorders to name a few. Bottom line, it’s categorized as a flame retardant and it’s derived from corn and soy oil which we already know is pure GMO.
  • Papaya- This one saddens me. I have memories of my late father and I enjoying a papayas together. It is one of my favorite fruits yet I rarely get the opportunity to eat them anymore. Papayas grown in Hawaii are all highly likely GMO (or contaminated) and are one of the most common GMO crops of all as. Speaking of GMOS…

Right….

  • Food coloring- This one kills me. Heavily linked to ADHD, hyperactivity, behavioral issues in children and let’s not forget cancer.

“Blue dye number 1 and 2 are linked with cancer in animal tests, while red dye number 3 causes thyroid tumors in rats.  Green dye number 3 is linked to bladder cancer, and yellow dye number 6 is linked to tumors of the kidneys and adrenal glands.  While these colors are readily used in most processed, prepared and packaged foods, what bothers me the most is that they are commonplace in the diets of children. Most candy, cakes, cupcakes, baked goods, maraschino cherries, fruit cocktail, gelatin desserts, and soft drinks contain these harmful substances, which serve no other purpose than to make so-called food look “pretty” and attract children whose bodies are particularly sensitive to them during the developmental years.” (Foodmatters).

  • Bread with Potassium Bromate- Despite discovering this additive has been found to cause cancer in lab rats, 35 years later the FDA has done nothing about it. Here is the abstract in which they refer to it as “a new renal carcinogen”.
  • Olestra- This garbage is so bad it comes with a warning label that states it can cause abdominal pain, ANAL LEAKAGE, and gastrointestinal distress…(they had me anal leakage). These issues of course can lead to nutrient deficiency. More on Olestra here.
  • Arsenic Laden Chicken- Sigh..Need I say more?  (Banned in the European Union).
  • Preservatives BHA and BHT“BHA and BHT can induce allergic reactions in the skin [1]. The International Agency for Research on Cancer classifies BHA as a possible human carcinogen [2]. The European Commission on Endocrine Disruption has also listed BHA as a Category 1 priority substance, based on evidence that it interferes with hormone function [3].Long-term exposure to high doses of BHT is toxic in mice and rats, causing liver, thyroid and kidney problems and affecting lung function and blood coagulation [4].BHT can act as a tumour promoter in certain situations [5]. Limited evidence suggests that high doses of BHT may mimic estrogen [6], the primary female sex hormone, and prevent expression of male sex hormones [7], resulting in adverse reproductive affects.” (DavidSuzuki.org) Check your breakfast cereals!

Milk and Dairy Products with rBGH/rBST (Recombinant Bovine Growth Hormone) which is a synthetic hormone injected into cows to force them produce more milk and grow bigger faster. Basically GMO milk. Let’s take a moment and consider how that might affect your children and their growth. There is a reason we are seeing premature development in young children. Let’s not forget it is also linked to cancer. Anytime you mess with hormones that risk naturally increases. I urge you to watch this 4 minute clip for better understanding by consumer advocate and author Jeffrey M. Smith. The importance of self care.

Standard

We all know the impact of stress in our daily lives. At times we witness it in the change in our moods, the aches and pains that we have become so accustomed to that we have lost sight of what it truly means to live optimally. I find that many of us focus on one aspect of health while completely disregarding the importance of balance in all areas. At my most recent visit to my acupuncturist he mentioned my liver was “angry“. I was carrying “anger” in my liver which in turn was causing a multitude of issues for me. I arrogantly scoffed at this comment at the time but soon realized the truth in his words. I WAS angry. I carried a lot of frustration that I replayed internally without a healthy outlet and it began to consume me. I knew I had to get a grip. I was losing sight of the bigger picture by remaining in auto pilot, in turn I was only doing a disservice to myself and those I love.

Parents of special needs children and caregivers can relate to the impact of constant high stress situations. PTSD is extremely common in these situations. A recent study published stated that many brain scans given to mothers of children with autism to be similar to soldiers who have returned from war with PTSD.

The first step has to be finding at least one, undisturbed hour a day you can dedicate to yourself entirely. If you have to start at 20 minutes that’s ok too but FORCE yourself to make yourself a priority. Meditation/prayer, exercise, read a book, yoga are just a few things I do to unwind. In the world of autism/special needs I know there is little room for this..but believe me, your kids NEED you so consider this an ultimate MUST. I am not even there entirely myself but taking baby steps will soon give you the momentum to accept this as a lifestyle change.

I can guarantee there are countless parents out there who go to great lengths to ensure their children eat organic, unprocessed foods and then turn around and succumb to eating unhealthily for themselves..because we are EXHAUSTED people! I get it. Been there way too many times. Over the past year, I have gone vegetarian. It has truly and effortlessly made a huge difference in my health. My kids’ have always eaten gfcfsf (gluten-free, casein-free, soy-free) so I understand everyone has to do what is best for their families. I soon realized how controversial it was to suddenly not eat meat. I felt whenever I shared my enthusiasm about how much better I felt, people felt I was judging them for their choice to eat meat. Never. It’s never okay to guilt anyone into a lifestyle they aren’t ready for. Beyond that, I believe that approach never opens the door to positive dialogue. We all have something to learn from one another. I like to take in what has worked for others and customize it for what works for me. I DO care to share what has helped ME solely in hopes to help others. This is all in love people! Before I stopped eating meat I believed strongly in the testimonies and health of vegans, so in my mind I was already there.

Eating is a highly emotional thing. You can’t eff around with people’s appetites! They will get pissed. In a world of hardship sometimes food is the only solace. I don’t have an agenda to alter your choice to not eat meat but practicing some techniques of becoming a more conscious eater is imperative. Unawareness only contributes to unconscious “emotional” eating. Sugars and fats are so accessible and hidden in places you have no idea existed. This is the importance of understanding nutrition and educating yourself on what you put into your body. Sugar and fats release opioids in our brains. They enact on the opioid receptors that help control our appetites. Sugar is a drug..no lie. There is tons of evidence to support it. The film Fed Up sheds light on the state of sugar consumption in the U.S. I urge everyone to watch this film with their families. I cannot stress the importance of sharing knowledge about nutrition to your children at a young age. I’ve had people tell me that I’m “too strict” regarding my kids’ diets but I also look at the health of the person telling me this and their overall lifestyle. It’s not a choice for me to prepare healthier meals for my kids. Their entire neurological and behavioral health are deeply impacted by the foods they ingest so I never give a damn what anyone says. Just remember, those people have no idea the struggle it took to regain your child’s health! Trust yourself!

Let’s stop for a minute and consider our health as a nation. Despite being amongst the most affluent nations, we STILL are one of the unhealthiest. It’s time to ask ourselves WHY? Here is a breakdown where the U.S. stands compared to other developed nations.

Restoring the Lotus.

I struggled for many years unable to find my voice in the midst of life’s chaos. I refused to attempt to journal through my misery as so many loved ones suggested, in fear of seeing the words in front of me..this would mean it’s real. This would mean I had to face my pain and I simply was not ready to do that.

I fell silent after my son’s autism diagnosis at 2 years old. It was a pain I’ve not articulated to the world until now..Just weeks shy of his 9th birthday, I am finally ready.

Restoring the Lotus.

I look back in amazement of our journey. Some days I had no idea how we would push through the multiple adversities we faced as a family, but I recall every angel that came into our lives to help us in the way we needed at the time. I will forever hold those individuals close to my heart.

With that being said, I want to share what has helped us and pay it forward. There is a tremendous amount of misinformation on health and wellness. I am not a healthcare provider. I am Mom..a highly intuitive one..We have witnessed the power of clean, holistic living and want to share our experiences with others who might need guidance on making changes.

This blog will be dedicated to the Mind, Body and Spirit. Learning and UN-learning what we thought we knew.
